De La Salle Institute proudly announces that Kenyatta Shelton has been chosen as its new girls varsity basketball head coach.
“We had a good interview process with over 30 candidates,” De La Salle Athletic Director Tom White said. “And we’re blessed to get our No. 1 pick in Kenyatta.
“Her knowledge of and passion for basketball is obvious and she clearly shares our common belief that everything is centered around the growth and development of our student-athletes into young women who are committed to the Lasallian tenets of faith, service, and community.”
Shelton comes to De La Salle after serving as the girls junior varsity basketball head coach at Crane Medical Prep since October 2021. While at Crane, Shelton coached her team to the city semifinals in two consecutive seasons as well as going undefeated. In the 2025-26 season, Crane finished second in the city playoffs.
For Shelton, taking over the Meteor program will mark her first voyage as a varsity head coach.
“I’m super excited,” she said. “I’ve been coaching for 13 years and I knew I wanted my own program two years ago. This means a lot to me to build a powerhouse. I always wanted to accomplish that. This seems like a great opportunity to start.”
“Having my first (varsity) head coaching job is super cool. I finally have an opportunity to be a head coach. I have a passion for the game and a passion for coaching. And to be a head coach, how cool is that?”
“I’m ready to hit the ground running, I’m ready for the challenge and I’m ready to make De La Salle a powerhouse with our girls program. I absolutely mean that.”
In addition to her impressive coaching resume, Shelton also brings a strong on-court background having played at Illinois State University where she captained the Redbirds in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. She also played professionally in Eurobasket Europe with teams in Germany and Portugal.
“We had some high-level candidates who interviewed for the position and Kenyatta rose to the top with her vision for our program, her experiences and her commitment to the student-athletes,” De La Salle principal Tom Schergen said. “We look forward to having Kenyatta lead our girls basketball program into the future.”
